Most of the Forums I am familiar with, including a phpBB Forum I operate, will email you when a  thread you have subscribed to gets a new message, but you get no email when someone starts a new thread.

That is one reason I like Yahoo groups. Even though much of what goes by is not something I have a current interest in, I never know when a gem might show up.
