To me those 2 formulas are slightly different. As a metter of fact (coïncidence!) there is also an excellent article on revisiting RSI in January issue of S&C by author Hadi Seyedinajad ("The RSI miracle") who uses standard RSI calculations - I encourage you to read it, I tested it with AB and made some good trades with it.
