GoogleFinance.ca uses the same nomenclature as the main site ...

http://finance.google.ca/finance?q=NYSE:BMO
If you enter BMO as the search term and click on 'get quotes' you do
get the direct URL but the default page for this address is TSE:BMO
http://finance.google.ca/finance?q=bmo
I don't see any evidence that there is downloadable data for any
Canadian stocks at either site, except for Canadian companies listed
on the major US exchanges.
IMO the reason TSE:RY returns an error message, when using AQ, is
that the downloadable data does not exist e.g.
AmiQuote will download data for NYSE:RY but returns an error message
for TSE:RY
