SandP sectors are rather coarse (but free!)
One competitor with a finer grain classification is Hemscott (but not
free!)
- UK company?
- purchased by Morningstar (they are everywhere with fundamentals)
- they do cover UK, US and Canada
- free on UK site but they make you work hard for it
http://www.hemscottdata.com/index.htm
Premium service - 7 day trial but only has searchable sectors for UK
stocks... web based and not downloadable friendly.
http://www.hemscott.com/
I think they have Candadian classifications but it is a business to
business site (email solicitation might uncover some access).

There has been past discussion and links etc with Hemscott lists ...
not sure about for CDN...
... Hemscott is pretty tight ... not much leaks out to the net but
you never know.
If you want to follow sectors in detail and don't mind doing it the
hard way:
Canadian Industry Statistics has lists for goods and services
companies ... all sizes ... possibly could do a spreadsheet sort to
match CDN ticker lists with their lists and eliminate unlisted co's.

For CDN ticker lists:
enter V or TO in YahooCanada symbol lookup
or www.eoddata.com
has free ticker lists (free membership ... that might lead to advt
emails in your box).
