Steve, it all depends on what your IRA trustee will let you trade. Most brokers stick to the traditional securities. I see someone mentioned that IB will allow futures in their IRA accounts.
If you want even more flexibility (and cost) try someone like Millenium Trust Co. You can have futures, real estate, coins etc in your IRA in addition to the usual stuff. The annual trustee fee for those types of activities will run you $300/year plus fees associated with money transfers into and out of accounts etc.
It makes no sense for small accounts but can be realistic for $20k or more.
I have had regular futures accounts and managed futures accounts thru MF Global (Mann futures) with Millenium as the IRA trustee and a third party as the advisor for several years with no problems. Shorting futures is exactly like buying futures. No difference in how they are traded or accounted for.
