Apologies if my posts exascerbated the situation.
Challenging you, or AB, defintely wasn't on my mind - not very much
anyway O:-)
I posted because the topic was interesting, I wanted to find out more
and I want to acknowledge DLoyer and share a little friendship with
him/her and the others in the thread, who one tends to form
friendships with over time, including yourself of course (I happen to
like DL - a very fine young person in more ways than one).
I don't think a thread has to have a definite point - it can be like
a fireside chat, with some friends, after a wine or two.
Anyway - why I mainly posted.
I want to thank you for your KB article and the post below, which for
the most part I thought was you at your best - letting us see AB
through your eyes and elevating some of us to new levels of
understanding of AB and computing (this includes the forum also - to
me it was the forum at its best).
I have thanked you and the forum for this before but I still think
you underestimate the educational benefits that accrue, to people
like me, from hanging around the AB environment (when I bought AB I
didn't know I was getting this bonus).
The discussions in this forum kick off my natural curiousity and get
me started on learning things I would never have taken an interest in
otherwise.
Examples:
I went to the NVIDIA site and read a little on the GPU's and CUDA
I didn't understand the array processing but I might want to find out
more one day.
I learnt a little about the logic that AB uses for BT.
I am likely to google/wiki something on emulation, compilation,
memory, cacheing etc
I am actually thinking about learning some more programming (what the
heck are they doing there kerneling and cacheing and passing etc??)
If DLoyer wrote a tutorial on how he did it I would lap it up
(assuming it is in plain english).
etc.
Perhaps you don't realise how desperate some of us are to learn AB
thoroughly and how this is the only place we can fill in some of the
missing pieces.
The bad news:
You didn't convince me that there is no value in what DL is talking
about.
You did convince me, though, that you shouldn't take it up for AB.
My simplistic view of it is that even with a laptop, that has say 32
processors * half speed I still have more computational grunt sitting
there (on my new LT graphics card) than I do on my single core
desktop 2+GHz CPU so in some situations (optimizing) it can have uses?
My understanding is the extra grunt has to be discounted for
overheads (the cost of passing it back and forth and sending it down
the pipe etc) but I still think that on a case by case basis there
are benefits - good luck to those who can do it and/or a prepared to
share it with others.
When AB moves to multicore processing then the benefits minus the
overheads will tend to evaporate somewhat.
I may still be in ignorance on some points, however, the onus is not
on you to educate me.
If and when you do I can assure you that I am genuinely very greatful
and in admiration of you.
Also thanks to the forum - while I don't run out and change anything
overnight I really am influenced by your opinions (I spend more time
mulling over some of them than what you may think - even the contrary
ones Dave!)
