Hey Brian,

The term tape reading comes from the olden days when stock
transactions were printed on a ticker tape and traders would watch the
tape and and make trades based on what they saw.

Today there are 3 things that are comparable to tape reading:

Time and Sales reading is probably the closest.

There is reading the DOM (Depth Of Market, also called the order book)
and chart reading (also called Price Action).

Volume Spread Analysis that the OP mentioned is a form of chart
reading that incorporates volume.
