Paul,
I found WindowsLiveWriter quite good - its like learning any
small MS
program - say 1 hour.
It is very similar to using
Word.
The WordPress version is new since I was last there but I see no
reason why WLW won't still work as per the instructions at
UKB

only tricky part is entering code.
Set AB tools >> preferences to
copy as text (uncheck HTML) and add
special AFL tags before and after your
pasted AFL coed e.g.
