I started using AB with eSignal data - it worked just fine, but was
quite expensive. I then ran IB + eSig data services in parallel for
several months and noticed very little difference between the two, so
I dropped eSig 3 years ago and am satisfied with the AB - IB combo.
My shortest timeframe is 5 min bars. I use Yahoo for EOD data.
Just for statistics I have 5 accounts at IB, and manage them through
an Advisor account. I use about a dozen symbols, futures + SPY, DIA,
Tick, Trin, stocks. I occasionally daytrade, but usually not. I'll
turn on the RT screen when I'm entering or exiting positions.
I should also note that IB data is not necessarily free. If you don't
meet trading minimums or want certain types of data, or have certain
types of accounts, they charge you. So check them out thoroughly
before you pick IB.
