One area where a single toolbar button makes sense, in my view, is for sheet properties such as time period.  Instead of an icon for each period (e.g, daily, weekly, etc.), Metastock's approach of a single button that opens a pull down menu and then changes the icon to the selected period is both easy to use and saves toolbar real estate.  Ease of use and/or toolbar space saving for sheet and/or pane application could also be realized in other areas (e.g., line type).
