1) Take a serious look at data quality from Yahoo. Do you really want to put your real money at risk developing a system from bad data? If you just need US stocks then all it costs is $20 or 30 per month to get clean data from Warden or QP. At Warden they keep correcting their snapshot eod data (eod bars for the current day) during the trading hours.

2) Symbol conversion is the fact of life in this business, you can use a spreadsheet program to convert symbols. For importing ASCii data look at ASCii Importer, it's Import Wizard on stereoids:

3) For deleting non-trading tickers take a look at this:
