Semi-logarithmic (Y axis logarithmic and X axis linear) is often
used for price data because equal vertical distance on the Y axis corresponds to
equal % change. This is an
important point when using trendlines (pivot points can be quite different)
and when prices are detrended (e.g., in cycle studies) by measuring
departures from a moving average (need to be certain that the MA period is <
shortest cycle length ). In the
case of linear price data, % change in price will appear to be larger as price
increases leading to significant distortions when detrended with increasing
amplitude of the difference around the zero line.
