solved it! all new blank charts added to the layout come in with
desired bar style (as per local default layout) and Price Chart Style
set to "auto". the *final* chart created in a layout needs to have its
Price Chart Style manually set to "Bars" - then after saving and
re-opening the layout, all charts in layout retain bars and do not
revert to candles. peculiar, but nothing else i tried worked... -jim
