I did a little experiment to check on various AFL execution times. Here's a summary. 

Times are for completing a loop of 1000 executions.

empty loop             0.15 ms
x=5                        0.20 ms
VarSet()                 1.20 ms
VarGet()                 1.00 ms
StaticVarSet()         3.60 ms
StaticVarGet()         1.75 ms
ATC Set value         1.90 ms
ATC Get value        1.70 ms
