Michael: Thanks for the info. Your post made me double check the booklet of the APC UPSs I am using. It says "It also safeguards your equipment from damaging surges and spikes that travel along your utility and phone lines". That makes me think it has sufficient protection.

  Yes this is also a problem.

  However, A UPS won't necessarily protect you from lightening. It will 
  protect from over voltage - If it creeps high, But a huge spike
  will still get through before the UPS can switch over to battery. 
  (Relays can only work so fast).

  Lightening protection is best done with a GOOD QUALITY surge protector, 
  Preferably before the UPS (So UPS isn't damaged as well)
