Mark,

You are right

Always throw the stuff in the floor safe, but that is not an option for most

I have over 500gb of HD files and 45 DVD's of files and images that I have,
would go broke with the online storage

The External HD's I use one would not put in a lap top case though either

A nuke is a remote possibility, but house fire and flooding, or theft are
real ones. I was not saying you should not use external hard drives. In fact
I use it to store backup images etc.

However, if your laptop bag is stolen with your external hard drive in it;
or the house with 10 hard drives catches fire, you may be out of luck. For
very important stuff, such as your profitable trading systems, the source
code for your sharewares, etc, backing them up somewhere online, be it mozy
or you gmail account (both have 2GB from free), will bring you another level
of peace of mind. Or if you don't like the online idea, just don't keep all
your eggs in one basket, bring a backup drive/CD/DVD to your work location
or a bank deposit box, or a friend's house periodically.

Mark,

If where your back up lies is nuked and you are not then you are out of luck

External HD's are so cheap now

About $179 for 250gb USB2.0 and firewire connect

Or

500gb Seagate eSata HD ($ 359) external this is fast for back ups and both
come with back up software to copy your computers HD exact down to the
Registry ( this runs on PCI host adapter card included)

Talking about "The Big One", no one has mention online backup. These days
you can pay $5 a month to get 30GB remote space to back up your stuff
online.

I use Mozy remote back service and it was very easy to set up. They also
provide 2GB space for free. If my city is nuked tomorrow and I happen to be
out of town, I still have all my trading systems and family photos, and can
start to make a living in no time, provided that the markets are still open
after the nuke.

Hi Herman,

It's a personal choice, but for me, given the size, cheap cost, speed
and convenience, I'd always have a multiple physical drive system. My
primary box has five hard drives -- three IDE and two SCSI. I also
have an external USB that is 99 percent off line, turned on only for
weekly imaging.

Removable drives ... sure.

RAID or mirroring might be the safest, and of course if you are
*really* determined, an off-site backup. But my biggest worry here
is "The Big One", so I'd probably need foreign-country backup to be
really safe, or at least hundreds of kilometers away. I think, even
now, that is available -- I mean I am pretty sure that there are
services on line that will store your backups. Cost, diameter of
pipe, and trust, would be some issues that you'd need to assess.
