Herman has posted the solution recently:

Sorry, instead of calling the variable "InAutomaticAnalyzer" I should have
more accurately called it "InBackTester". Please read help on the Status()
function. This should work:

InBacktester= Status("Action") == 5;
InExplore 	= Status("Action") == 4;
InIndicator = Status("Action") == 1;
Period 	= Param("Period",5,1,10,1);
if( InIndicator ) StaticVarSet("Period",Period); // We only set the
staticvar from indicators if( InExplore OR InBacktester ) Period =
StaticVarGet("Period"); Filter = 1; AddColumn(Period,"Period");
