John, Richard
I too use AB with the MS plug in for ASX data and would not favour an automatic retrieve for the following reason:
I use a third party data supplier (Justdata) to update my MS database.
I do not have any tools such as MS downloader to maintain that database, hence there are old tickers in that database.
I maintain my AB database to some extent manually, and recently by means of Michael / ozfalcons's excellent AB ASX Update files.
If AB was set to do an automatic configure and Retrieve every time I opened it, I would have to maintain my AB database on a daily basis!
You might recommend that this be a *selectable* option, though.
I have no problem with my monthly data management: the first step is the configure and retrieve process.
Glen,
with my database I notice that after mergers etc the "old" ticker will stay behind (eg in your case SIG would stop
updating while perhaps SIGDA would become active). Then after the final merger the SIG data file will still remain behind and a new adjusted data file will appear correctly labelled AWP or whatever. One of my monthly tasks is to hunt these down from the ASX website and just delete them from my AB database. Hence for my situation the manual process of doing the retrieve is better.

Just a note of caution - in my experience you need to be careful when using
MS Plugin and doing database maint on the MS files (adds, renames, deletes
etc.). AB does not sync dataabse with MS directories so even with a Retrieve
you can end up with database problems, incoreect/dead links etc. Only safe
solution I have found is to effectively wipe the AB
database before doing a
Retrieve.
The MS Plugin also used to truncate the MS symbol names - not sure if it
still does as I now use alternative method to get full symbol names into AB.
