Is the hard drive light flashing when the scan is running?
If the hard drive light is not flashing, then you are
running at maximum speed. 

If the hard drive light is flashing, you can try to get all
the data into RAM by *reducing* AB's cache from 10,000 to
100.  Although this is counter-intuitive, it worked for me.
On my 1.5 GB computer, the 1 GB database would not fit into
AB's internal cache, but it would fit into Windows hard
drive cache (provided I forced AB to use a very small
internal cache by setting it to 50 or 100 symbols). 

My guess is that AB's internal cache is optimized for
execution speed (and not optimized for space), but the
Windows hard drive cache is optimized for space.
