They are not THAT small, are they? The native resolution of my LCD
is 1280 by 1024 pixels (standard 19" LCD display). Any number larger
than 1024 would be larger than the available pixels on my screen,
yes?

In any case, I tried numbers way up there, including 5000 and 10000.
The problem is, in no case, does any number, expectedly in-range or
expected out-of-range, produce even the slightest variance in column
width.

I have no idea why.

P.S. I usually set Excel columns to about 80 pixel widths. When you
select the column divider in Excel and hold, you get a pop-up giving
width information, and you can adjust the column width on the fly by
dragging. The width information is somewhat odd however, as it is
formatted like this: Width: 8.11 (80 pixels)

I have no idea what the 8.11 is. It is not millimeters, nor
centimeters, nor inches, nor any other unit I know of. Why it is not
exactly 8.0, which would *seem*, somehow, to agree with 80 pixels, I
do not know. (Changing width to 8.0 produces a width of 79 pixels.)
But according to Excel, an 80 pixel-width column produces a column
just barely less than an inch wide (about 237 millimeters, I would
eye-ball estimate using a ruler).

I can see 15 and a fraction 80-pixel-wide columns on an empty Excel
spreadsheet. That is 1,200 pixels and some change, which adding in
the scroll bar width on the right and the row-number column on the
left, I would expect would come to exactly 1024, which is indeed the
number of horizontal pixels I have. I don't think 5000 is in-range
at all.
