The recommendation message follows.
I've been using Agnitum Outpost (the free version) ever since and
have found it most effective. From memory, he also recommended
Diskeeper Lite (which I still use) for defrag.

note that free version is more than enough for 90% of users.
AV: Norton is not that bad if you switch off certain features (like
script checking),
I have been using it for more than a year but I dropped it. I have
been using many freeware ones but frankly netiher AV nor any other
program detected any single virus on my system (due to filtering
attachments see below).
BTW: Outpost firewall has a very good feature that filters / renames
certain e-mail attachments. Using this feature for over one year I
can say
that this is all I need.
