Herman,
I will explain how I am handling this:
I have two running locations (but it does
not matter) one is "regular" and one is development.
I have lots of various databases but generally the
following I use the most:
- eSignal 1-minute database (I use this for my own
trading, I trade US securities using TWS IB and Warsaw
SE (WSE) securities
using web-based interface from DM
BZWBK (Polish broker) )
- includes 300+ US symbols that I
am particularly interested in at the moment plus all securities from
WSE
- Quotes Plus stocks and ETF database (for
end-of-day scans and analysis)
- default database - that is local EOD database
only with few symbols from Yahoo used for testing
Other than that I have about 20 different databases
I use for testing AmiBroker but not for my own trading.
The key is that my default database is small Local
EOD database. This ensures that:
- AmiBroker loads quickly
- does NOT launch any external sources by
default
- I can switch very quickly to any database I am
interested in using "Recently used databases" list in "File" menu (just one
click).
- there are 8 most recenly used databases
listed there and you can load them with one click.
Now each database I am using has DIFFERENT default
Layout.
Layout is a set of
indicators/windows/etc.
A window layout is a complete set of multiple windows open each with
different symbol, different display interval, different size, different set of
chart sheets.
This way when switching to different database
AmiBroker automatically loads DIFFFERENT set
of indicators and settings and I do not need to
worry about anything because AB handles this for me.

Starting AB with different data bases
Thanks Tomasz,
Perhaps you are right and it will just solve one problem but create
another...
My
problem is that i work on and use many different systems, from Tick to EOD
data, when i apply EOD formulas in a Tick environment my system can/may lock
up, especially when eSignal is On. I have many afl procedures that work
fine in one data base but not in another, the same formulas being accessible
from each Data base can cause problems. I spend a significant amount of time
every day hitting keys and trying CTRL-ALT-DEL (doesn't always work) to get
out of situations where Code and data base, or code and AA operation selected,
are incompatible. A complete hardware reboot is often the quickest way to get
going again.
I
know, it is all because i hit the keys too quickly... and a feeble mind :-) If
i always did everything the right way there would be no
problem.
best
regards,
herman
Hello,
You can install AB multiple
times into completely separate locations (not recommended because of
all additional work it requires
when installing updates) and have
separate shortcuts to each installation.
Alterative is to setup several folders with
different "START IN" property. "Start IN" defines the "CURRENT WORKING
DIRECTORY"
where AmiBroker looks for the files (including the preferences and all other config
files). This will allow you to have one installation
but multiple working folders. And each folder
that normally exists inside "AmiBroker" folder will need to be
creaded.
This includes "Formulas"
subfolder.
But frankly Herman, you should think twice
about this. Having everything separate means that you will have multiple
copies
of everythign and each editing you will need to
do more than once. This greatly increases the time just maintaining
everything

Starting AB with different data bases
It is not just the icon, renaming these would be good enough for
me.
I want to start each instance of AmiBroker with a different
database, each instance has a different purpose, and right now after each
startup i have to selected a different data base. i suppose what i
need is to be able to specify the dataSource (as in preferences) on the
command line...I think i must be doing something dumb or am missing ...
time to read the Help once more :-)
I suppose i could create separate directories/folders for different
AmiBroker DataBases, that way everything would be specific to the DB
used. Then make separate icons for each... In preferences i could specify
where the afl files are located, those folders could be independent of the
regular AmiBroker folders... that should work just great! Thanks guys
for making the old neurons click! Talking to the wall doesn't always
work...hmm...now to get the formula tree root path to
work...

To clarify, rightclick choose "Properties"
then "Change Icon". You can select an exe or dll to browse for new
icons. Not all contain icons though.

Create a new AB shortcut on
your desktop, then right click & choose "Change Icon" Icons are
usually stored in the exe or a .dll. You can browse Esignal, etc for
icons, or choose from default Windows icons, or even create your own
using an icon editor.

Starting AB with different data bases
Hello,
would
anybody know how to create different icons on the DeskTop that start
AB with different databases? I would like a variety of icons to
start of with, for example, IB data, eSignal data, QP2 data, Tick
data, etc. So that on start up they are loaded with relevant
code/Indicators and data base.
thanks
for any ideas!
herman.
