Hi das300,

Which program?

IMHO, backups today are done only by partition or drive imaging
programs. The best, which have been mentioned here, create a bit by
bit image of the drive, and back it up to a single file. The best
can also create incremental images, saving time and space. The best
also can image the drive while the drive is in use, not requiring
either a reboot or down time. Image files can be restored, or
mounted for restoration of individual files.

This requires at the very least, a second drive (no sense storing a
backup of a drive on the very drive you are backing up; if it goes
down it takes the backup with it), preferably one that is not on line
except when receiving the image. Better would be two removable (or
USB or Firewire) drives, which could be rotated. One would then
*always* be off line, and a lightning strike, for example, would not
take out both the system and the backup drive at once. It's just a
matter of how secure you need to be, or what kind of odds you are
willing to accept.

Most of these programs have simple and easy to understand interfaces.
Automation is a problem however, unless you are willing to have the
backup drive on line all the time, or can remember when to power it
on and off. If you have a LAN and your backup target is always
accessible, automation would be a piece of cake. You may need a
substantially more expensive version of the software, however, in
that case.

Best,

Yuki
