Thanks Graham - but I did that - see original post.  Seemed to have no effect - next time I started the Fib Retracement tool, the pale pastels were back.

Video driver problem perhaps - although I'm not sure why?  This is on a Dell Inspiron 8500 laptop with the 1900x1200 screen and the nVidia drivers - latest version.
