Hi,

Very late on this thread. But I think it is it
programatically possible, just like when one opens a mail, Hotmail has a option
to tell the sender that the letter has been opened. Just like that I do think it
is possible by using scripts in the mail which is not shown in the
message. I am guessing a little bit, but I do think it is entirely
possible. It might just open up a new avenue for fraudsters.

Prashanth

Bob, your Outlook express must work differently than
  mine.

Rightclicking first OPENS it, before offering
you the delete option on the menu.

My objective was to delete it WITHOUT opening it,
and Peter's suggestion worked without opening the email.

BTW, no one has offered any comments regarding
  question #2.

      Peter's solution worked well.  Rightclicking
first opens it, and the objective was to delete it without opening

          Ron,

What I have done is wait until I get the
next email so that the doubtful email has emails either side in time,
(or just re-oder by subject, then highlighted the email above (i.e
opened), then moved the cursor to the email below and then while
holding down the shift key opened the email below.  Now you have
three emails highlighted.  I delete all three and then go to the
delete folder and retrieve the two good ones.

          Clumsy but I understand it.

          Peter

I just received an obviously fake email
            entitled "Citi e-mail <A
            href="">Verification-mrdavis9@xxxxxxxxxx",
and it does NOT have an attachment.

I want to delete it without it opening it
because of the possibility  that opening it may be the
trigger which causes their scheme to fradulenty use my
            charge card account.
