Actually, DT, the puzzle is a mirage, a scam. The hypotenuses are
slightlyand subtly curved. They just look like straight lines but are not
really. Ifyou stare at the figures long enough, you may notice the upper
hypotenuse ofboth triangles is ever so slightly curved, concave in the
upper diagram andconvex in the lower, with just enough difference to make
the one extra boxin the lower one. If you look at the two triangles you
will see that thedark green one is two up and five across, or 2.5:1, and
the red one is 3 upand 8 across or 2.667:1. The major triangle is 13 x 5,
or 2.6:1. The onlyway you can do that is by curving the hypotenuse lines,
regardless of howsubtly. So, you were right about the "feel good"
appearance of thetriangles, but mathematically the "slight difference" is
