I tend to agree on the awards being a joke.. But, I will say this.....
The S&C magazine is extremely informative when it comes to technical
articles :)
I started out with TC2000.. very low end software and their data
service is ok.. I do find errors in their data though.
Esignal is nice but pricey.
The other one I've used is Trade Navigator which I still think beats
the hell out of TC2k and Esignal.
I'm in the process of evaluating AmiBroker and so far I'll say it
beats the hell out of Trade Navigator in terms of functionality.
