Ron: thanks for the offer, but no need.
It really is academic anyway and Chuck R sent me a note saying the Windows
Explorer periodically goes out and “quizzes” all the drives,
including the CDs.  I always run with Windows Explorer open so this is a
reasonable explanation.

Thanks,

Ken

I have not experienced this personally, however, a few weeks
ago, when I was in a small business establishment standing near their computer,
I heard their HD slowly start to spin faster and faster to the point that you
knew it would fly apart.  Then it would slow down, and later it would
enter the super spin cycle again.  If you are interested, I can ask them
what the problem was the next time I happen to go there.  Ron D

Really Off-Topic: CD Drive Motor

&#8220;Does the CD have to stay in the
drive&#8230;.?&#8221;

Not really, but sometimes I forget and
leave it in there.

The sound (and my estimate that the RPMs
are much higher than normal operating (meaning reading) speed), suggest it is
not executing an automatic start sequence. Rather the motor has received some
sort of strange signal that overrides any speed restrictions.  I sometimes
think that a loud crash followed by parts flying out of the CD drawer will
happen.

Funny no one else experiences this.
Must be my hardware.

Off-Topic: CD Drive Motor

I finally can not stand it any more and need to ask if any of you
experience this:

My CD drive, when it contains a CD, will randomly spin its motor (I
think it is the motor) and hum for 10 to 20 seconds at a time.  If I
press the open button during one of these spins, it of course stops.
Otherwise, it stops on its own and will repeat at some random time in
the future.  Based on the sound, it seems like it is really revving high
RPMs.

<font size=2
color=maroon face="Times New Roman">Just
a guess.  Perhaps it is looking for an automatic setup/installation/start
up file, and that action is precipitated by something that you are doing.
Does the CD have to stay in the drive?

This really bugs me but everything else about it operates just as
normal.

Anyone else experience this and do you have an explanation?

Sorry for such an off topic question, but this group has lots of
collective experience and I am sure I can get some information.

Thanks,

Ken
