couldn't you just sell, without worrying about if you're actually holding the
position? The sell will be ignored if you're not.

If you
want to short instead of sell, you'd have to add appropriate filters to the
short signal to make sure it only shorts when you want to, but I sort of doubt
that already holding it long is a key part of that.
