My experience with so-called "full-service" futures brokers is that they are no more helpful than going to the CME or CBOT website and reading all the material there.
The best thing you can do for yourself, in addition to reading all the material in the websites above, is look at some historical data to understand when the contract rolls over in addition to what the volume is. You'll find that rollovers do not happen on expriation day, and each set of contracts (equity, currency, commodity) differs. Also look at some real-time quotes of various contracts to see what the spread is.
One thing to get you started is the rollover cycle for e-mini S&P, NQ, DOW, and RUT:
"It's the first Thursday after the first Friday. This month the first Friday was June 1st, so the first Thursday after that was the first Thursday in the month. Actually it's the 2nd Thursday before expiration Friday, which is the 3rd Friday in the month, but it works out the same."
