Ed,

Run some benchmark on both your machines to find real speed.
Sometimes faster CPU clock does not mean faster machine.
Especially athlons are faster than equally clocked pentiums 4s.

Most probably the reason is not CPU speed but disk speed.

In order to verify this you may try to run some long optimization
on SINGLE stock on both machines and compare times.

In this case the hard disk speed would not account into the timing.

If single-stock optimization runs faster on your notebook than
on your desktop it means that you have hard-disk speed problem.

If single-stock optimization runs slower on your notebook
than on your desktop it means that this is CPU-speed problem.

If you find that this is hard-disk speed problem then
adding more RAM and increasing in-memory cache setting would help.

If this is CPU-speed problem then adding more RAM would have
minimal impact.

thanks for the replies sofar.

I always use the AC power so that should give me full functionality.
It seems to me something else could be changed. Don't know what
though ...
