Graham,
I found that if I work in Default Layout, it gets
overwritten if I switch to another one and exit.
Effectively, whatever layout you are in, it gets
saved as Default on exit, overwriting whatever default was

Pref/misc do you have save on exit checked for each of the options??
This works fine for me. alternatively press the save button prior to
exiting.....
