What are UI effects?
I have the indexing already off apparently, and I have already turned
off the messenger one, whatever that does.
I also note on the list under computer management something called
Themes that is automatic. Can anyone explain what this does, as there is
no explanation in the help files of windows.

Cheers,
Graham

If you turn off the extraneous things in XP (file indexing, UI effects,
auto-MSN messenger startup, etc), it seems a lot nicer than windows 2K.

Here's a few differences that are noticeable (YMMV based on
hardware/software):
- XP seems much more stable than 2K
- less mysterious memory blowups in XP compared to 2K
- faster application startup in XP
- *** fast-switch users - great for families/couples. you can switch out
of
your session to login screen, and another user can log in. Your programs
keep running. You can switch between logged in users, without logging
out.
- faster login in XP
- XP has driver verification and driver rollback.
- XP includes a defrag utility, unlike 2K.

However the XP licensing scheme isn't as easy to deal with.
