Gilles,

You can assign a keyboard shortcut to show/hide workspace window
as Thomas suggested.
Auto-hiding may be implemented some time in the future but
this is not on top of priority list.

Toolbars - yes I face the problem of limited screen space and
will have to address this problem with some popup toolbars.

Unfortunately implementing these non-standard UI extensions
is quite time consuming so please be patient.
