The QQQ is an ETF (Exchange Trade Fund) which is set up as a
depository trust to hold the same stocks that are part of the Nasdaq
100 (top 100 non-fincanical stocks on the Nasdaq exhchange in the
USA). There is an index called the ^NDX (Yahoo's naming convention
with the ^) which trades the N100. The index goes back several years,
but the QQQ started more recently in March of 1999.
The best known ETF is the SPY (which attempts to track the S&P500
index). There is also an ETF for the Dow Jones Industrial Index (the
DIA). There are dozen and dozens of other EFTs but some are very
thinly traded and thus are of limited interest (to me at least).
