Just a note to let you know your thoughts and prayers are most appreciated.
There is an almost surrealistic quality about all this. It is simply too
overwhelming to actually get your mind around it- to encompass it, much
less understand it.

But to know that people everywhere identify with the pain and suffering of
thousands of virtual strangers is somehow reassuring. It reaffirms the
faith in Mankind we need to maintain at times of such disasters as has
befallen America.

My office is literally just off Capitol Hill, not more than a mile from the
White House and within 10 minutes walk of the Capitol itself.

Yesterday was my first day back at work after an extended vacation, and the
office was quite busy when news of the first plane crashing into the World
Trade Center came through. I worked through the day, all the while
listening to the events unfolding. Many of my patients are government
people, and several were phoned from their offices, as they were waiting
for me in my office, and ordered to return in order to deal with the
unfolding chaos.

By mid-morning, the city was ordered evacuated! Washington, DC, ordered
evacuated!!

By the time I was finished, it was nearly 3:30PM, and I drove home, past
the Capitol, past the House and Senate buildings. All were deserted. Past
the Judiciary centers, up Pennsylvania Avenue, all deserted- except for
more police than I have ever seen, and armed military guards at the
monuments and Smithsonian Museums.

Everyone here is truly in shock, whether we have suffered a direct personal
loss or not. It will be days and days before they uncover all who have been
trapped in the buildings in New York. I have many patients who work in the
Pentagon, and as I write this, hundreds are feared dead, and the fate of
hundreds of others is still unknown.

The feeling of grief is nearly universal throughout America, and it is of
much more comfort than you could possibly imagine that you have written
with a heart full of compassion and concern.

Thank you so much,
