You can use SnagIt or HyperSnap forever as a demo, but
not as smoothly as a registered copy. HyperSnap will place a HyperSnap
sign on your gif, and SnagIt will make you click through one additional dialog
box. For freeware, checkout <A

capture.

You have to use a screen capture program.
There are many, but here perhaps the two most popular are SnagIt and
HyperSnap. You can find their URLs with a
search.
